St. Mary’s Island History Group Meeting – Monday 11th November

St. Mary’s Island History Group meets on the evening of Monday 11th November at 7.30 pm at St. Mary’s Island Community Centre.  The usual £1 contribution for refreshments and £2 for visitors.

Their speaker at that meeting is Colin Harvey who will be talking about the story of the wreck SS Richard Montgomery.  There will be an audio-visual presentation that Colin has created from his long-term interest and the developing stories over the years.

The SS Richard Montgomery was an American Liberty ship built during WWII and used to carry cargo during the war.  The ship was wrecked in the Thames Estuary, near Sheerness in 1944 whilst carrying a cargo of munitions.  Explosives remain on board giving cause for concern.  There is a large exclusion zone around the wreck which is constantly monitored by the British authorities.

Members are welcome to bring a friend or family member along; the group is keen to build on its membership.

On Monday 9th December the group will have its Christmas gathering with mince pies, mulled wine, quizzes and some topical readings plus some pictorial mysteries.
