Iconic Tommy Figures stand proud at Chatham Maritime
The iconic Tommy and Mabel silhouettes now stand proudly on Quayside roundabout, the roundabout near the entrance to the Universities at Medway site and on the Stones roundabout as you drive onto St. Mary’s Island – a focal point in the centre of our community at Chatham Maritime. Every figure purchased helps to keep veterans in permanent paid employment at Royal British Legion Industries, of which Chatham Maritime Trust is a customer and is proud to support.
Armistice Day marks the moment the First World War ended. It’s a time to honour the 888,246 British and Commonwealth lives lost, and to reflect on the legacy they left behind. At RBLI, that legacy lives on in the figure of Tommy.
The term “Tommy” was used to describe British soldiers in WWI, ordinary men who showed extraordinary courage. Today, the Tommy figure stands as a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and national unity, representing all who have served across all branches of the Armed Forces. It remains an integral part of their identity today, honouring every veteran they support, every story preserved and every life changed through their inspiring work.
The figures will remain in situ for just a short period.
