The History of English Bridge Chapels – Talk by Sue Threader
A talk by Sue Threader, The Rochester Bridge Trust’s Bridge Clerk (Chief Executive) on 30th July 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm.
Sue will be talking about a true architectural rarity: the English bridge chapel.
Bridge chapels were built alongside, or as part of, bridges from the late Roman to the medieval periods. They were a place for travellers and pilgrims to rest and pray on long, often unsafe, journeys through medieval England.
Only six bridge chapels survive in England today – the Trust’s Bridge Chapel in Rochester is one such example.
Join Sue as she tells the story of these unique, rare places of worship.
