Study at the Universities of Medway

The Universities at Medway is a unique collaboration which brings together the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and MidKent College to provide a huge campus at Chatham Maritime.

Chatham Maritime Trust works closely with them to promote Chatham Maritime as a great place to study.

Historical significance

  • Chatham Maritime is built on the site of the historic Chatham Dockyard, which played a vital role in the British Royal Navy for over 400 years. The area is rich in maritime history, and students with interests in history, naval architecture, and marine studies often find it inspiring.
  • The proximity to such historical landmarks gives students a unique sense of connection to Britain’s naval heritage and offers opportunities for field studies and research projects.

Education institutions

  • University of Kent and University of Greenwich both have campuses located at Chatham Maritime. These universities are known for their high-quality education and offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
  • The area has a strong reputation for courses in fields such as engineering, business, history, and maritime studies, providing a diverse array of academic options.

Modern facilities

  • The educational institutions at Chatham Maritime have invested in modern facilities. For instance, The Historic Dockyard Chatham has been transformed into a site for research and education, where students can take advantage of advanced technology and well-equipped libraries and study spaces.
  • Modern student accommodations and leisure facilities make it a comfortable place to live and study. There’s also the Medway Student Hub, offering common spaces, cafes, and activities for students to socialize and unwind.

Proximity to London

  • Chatham Maritime is just a short train ride from London, making it ideal for students who want access to the resources, networking opportunities, and culture of the capital while enjoying a more affordable cost of living.
  • The location also offers strong transport links to other parts of the UK and Europe.

Beautiful waterfront location

  • Situated along the River Medway, Chatham Maritime offers stunning waterfront views and a calm, peaceful environment for study. The marina, parks, and public spaces make it a relaxing place to live.
  • The atmosphere encourages a balance between academic work and relaxation, with opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, boating, and cycling.

Student community and activities

  • Chatham Maritime fosters a vibrant student community. There are student unions, clubs, and societies that offer a range of extracurricular activities, ensuring that students can engage socially, build skills, and pursue personal interests.
  • The area hosts events and festivals, including historical reenactments and maritime-themed activities, making it a lively place to be for history buffs and culture enthusiasts.

Affordable cost of living

  • Compared to major UK cities like London, the cost of living in Chatham Maritime is generally more affordable, particularly for student accommodation, transportation, and daily expenses. This makes it attractive for students on a budget.

What our students say...

As a civil engineering student I get a feeling of history, endeavour and success just being in and around the buildings and Dockyard at Chatham Maritime.

The Estate has changed so much since my husband and I worked at Chatham Naval Base back in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Very impressed with the Estate which has been restored to make it a great place to work, shop and a great dining experience. We quite often shop at the weekends or visit the cinema and dine out at one of the restaurants.
