The centre of the community
The Community Centre is the social hub of St Mary’s Island.
This purpose built facility has multi purpose halls and a meeting room which can all be hired for events and groups.
The centre is the venue for many health and fitness groups including yoga, zumba, pilates and many more. Play groups and hobby groups including photography and a local history group also call the centre home.
Other community events are also held at the centre including the Christmas Fair and exhibitions.
The Community Centre website was updated in 2018 so that potential hirers can now view the calendar to see what’s on and vacant slots.
There are two halls a large hall that can hold 190 people and a small hall with a capacity of 60. The two can be combined for large events to create a single space with a capacity of 250.
The centre houses an attractive meeting room with a large meeting table which can seat up to 20 people.
Other facilities include:
- White board and flip chart
- Pull down projector screen
- Projector with USB connection
- Free tea & coffee
- Free WiFi
To find out what’s on at the community centre or to book facilities please see the SMICC website.
Improvements to the Community Centre door were made in August 2018 making it easier for access and egress.
Update as at 15th March 2021:
Community Centre Following Government Roadmap
We trust this update finds you and your families safe and well. We are certain like us you absolutely welcomed the new Government roadmap outlined recently, which undoubtedly presented some positive news at last.
We at the community centre and CMT are working behind the scenes to plan the phased re-opening of the centre. We will review closely the Steps set out within the roadmap and will follow this guidance. We will of course strongly consider our own risk assessment and amend if necessary. The continued safety and welfare of our staff, hirers and facility remain the priority in this process. Subject to the successful arrival of each Step, we will strictly follow the rules set out, however, we will only align completely if we feel it is safe to do so, it remains the decision of CMT if it is deemed necessary to delay larger groups or social events to a later date.
Our priority is to welcome back our regular groups and hirers who are permitted. With step 1 underway which sees the return of children to school, we are working towards step 2, which will allow us to open our doors for ‘children’s activities’ and ‘parent and toddler groups’ from w/c 12th April. This comes in time for the start of school term 5 on 19th April.
We will of course need to wait on Government confirmation a week prior to this, that step 1 has been successful and that we can move on to step 2. If this is the case then we very much look forward to seeing the return of applicable groups from Monday 12th April.
We will continue to follow each Step change and update accordingly. Any private one-off bookings for events and functions will be taken on a strictly provisional basis and subject to review nearer the time.
The community centre office will have minimal opening hours, with staff working reduced hours, however all contact and communications will be responded to.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us via
In the meantime, keep safe and well and we look forward to seeing you as Steps allow.

Update as at 30th November 2020:
Dear Regular Hirers, Customers & Visitors
Community Centre Closure effective Wednesday 2nd December 2020
At a time when we were hoping to re-open our doors to our valued hirers and visitors, unfortunately due to the latest changes in Government guidelines relating to our area entering the Tier 3 guidelines, sadly we have had to make the difficult decision to remain closed through December.
We understand that this is disappointing and challenging for all. The community centre will remain closed and staff furloughed until the new year. We very much hope to open and resume in some capacity from Monday 4th January ’21, subject to the guidelines in place then.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support, we very much appreciate this.
May we take this opportunity of wishing you a Happy Christmas, and may you and your families keep safe and well. We look forward to seeing you in 2021.

LATEST UPDATE – Community Centre Phased Re-Opening
We trust that during the last few months with the daily challenges and changes to our lives, that this correspondence finds you and your families safe and well. I’m sure like us you have missed immensely the routine of community life and the past normality of meeting friends, family, and day to day life prior to Covid-19.
We are all finding ways to resume to some form of new normality, and with this in mind and with the current Government Guidelines, we are delighted that we at the community centre and CMT are working hard to put in place a phased re-opening plan to the centre. We are currently working behind closed doors, implementing all the safety measures and restrictions required to make our facility safe for our staff and hirers.
Please be assured that we are looking at how we can enable hirers to return following the controlled measures and limitations set out by the government guidance, which are somewhat challenging. Unfortunately it may be some time before we are fully operational again and trust that we can work together to enable a smooth transition.
We are initially making contact with all our regular hirers to co-ordinate this phased return over the coming weeks / months.
Unfortunately, due to the occupancy restrictions and the management of our phased return, at this stage we are unable to honour any one-off private party or events that are booked for the coming weeks / months. If you have an upcoming booking or a party which we have not been able to accommodate or guarantee for future, a member of staff will be in touch in due course, to make arrangements for a full refund of your booking, or an alternative provisional booking at a later date. No new party / event bookings will be taken for the rest of the year. Any bookings for 2021 will be on a provisional basis only, reviewed and confirmed if able to do so nearer the time.
Many thanks for your understanding of the current situation. Please feel free to contact us at should you have any queries or concerns. We currently have reduced staff hours, but we will respond to you as soon as possible. Please keep a check on the website and answerphone (01634 890072) for office updates. Please be advised that visits to the centre will be for phased hirers only. General drop-ins, visits, show rounds or enquiries will be by appointment only.
Thank you for your continued support of the community centre and may you and your families keep safe and well.
