Wigmore Lecture – Suzanne Corbie: Origins & Traditions of Halloween
October 17, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This is the first in a series of talks that make up the Wigmore Lectures, a varied and stimulating series of talks at affordable prices. You can buy a season ticket for all six lectures for £20 or individual lectures priced at £4 each (except for the Christmas lecture which is priced at £5 including refreshments). Tickets can be booked at any Medway library or by calling 01634 337799. The series of lectures is presented by Medway Council’s Arts Development Team in collaboration with Medway Libraries and are usually held on the third Wednesday of the month.
Take a journey back in time to discover the influences that shaped our modern celebration of Halloween. Ancient gods and goddesses of the dead will make an appearance, accompanied by various strange mythical figures. From Celtic practices and Roman traditions to the changing perceptions of the Christian Church, Suzanne will look at how our perceptions of death and the afterlife, or fear of such things, have shaped this time of year and the traditions surrounding it.
The talk starts at 8 pm at Wigmore Library, 208 Fairview Avenue, Wigmore, Gillingham ME8 OPX.
