St. Mary’s Island History Group Meeting
January 13, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
This takes place on Monday 13th January at 7.30 pm at St. Mary’s Island Community Centre. Their guest speaker will be local historian David Burton who will be talking about ‘the Frozen Medway’ – the winters of 1895, 1947 and 1963 which were remarkable for their cold and ice. David will share some stories and surprising facts about those times. There will also be a mystery element – David will be bringing some objects new to his collection and you will have to guess what they are.
The group is very focused on their research for 2020. They want to find out more about the fire-fighting and damage control training schools that were on St. Mary’s Island when it was part of the Chatham naval base. The Island was the location for some dramatic fire-fighting displays during Navy Days. If anyone can shed light on this, particularly those sailors and dockyard workers who knew of them, please get in touch with the group.
For all details about the activities and research take a look at their website.
The group meets at St. Mary’s Island Community Centre at 7.30 pm. Parking is off the roundabout by the School. Visitors are welcome for £2 nd the groups asks for £1 donations towards refreshments.
This might be an ideal opportunity to introduce friends, family and neighbours to the Group.
The group is due to meet next on Monday 9th March.
