St. Mary’s Island History Group Meeting

November 11, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

St. Mary’s Island History Group meets at St. Mary’s Island Community Centre this evening at 7.30 pm.  Their  speaker will be Colin Harvey who will be telling the story of the wreck of SS Richard Montgomery.   Colin will be giving an audio-visual presentation that has been created following his long-term interest on the subject and the various developments over the years.

SS Richard Montgomery was an American Liberty ship built during WWII and used to carry cargo during the war.  The ship was wrecked in the Thames Estuary, near Sheerness in 1944 whilst carrying a cargo of munitions.  Explosives remain on board, giving ongoing concern.  There is a large exclusion zone around the wreck which is constantly monitored by the British authorities.

The group asks for the usual £1 contribution for refreshments and £2 for visitors.

Members are welcome to bring a friend or family member and is keen to build on its current membership.
