Medway Talk – Mathematics, Memetics & Artificial Intelligence: An Exploration Through Performance

February 22 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Medway Talks are FREE public talks.  This talk is delivered by Dr Neil Saunders at the University of Greenwich.

Dr Saunders is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Sciences and works in the field of algebra, specifically group theory and geometric representation theory.

Artificial intelligence has become a major focal point for so much research in mathematics, science, linguistics and the arts.  But what does it mean for a computer to be genuinely intelligent?  Does it even make sense to talk about computers in these terms?  When we start to try and answer these questions, we are drawn to more fundamental questions around how our own human understanding arises and how it works.  This talk will explore ideas of human and artificial intelligence from a range of viewpoints: philosophical, mathematical, artistic and memetic.  Drawing on recent and historical work of Dennett, Searle and Seth and with selected readings from David Harrower’s powerful play Knives  in Hens by professional actors Byrony Miller and David Young, this walk will explore how language is central to intelligence and understanding, whether that be human or artificial.

This talk is open to all including the local community, all University staff and students.  It will run from 6 pm to 7 pm and is FREE to attend through registration is required.  It takes place in Pilkington Building on the Medway Campus.

You can book a place via Eventbrite here.
