GREat Talks at Medway – Food that does good and doesn’t cost the Earth

The next talk in this series is ‘Food that does good and doesn’t cost the Earth’ is delivered by the University of Greenwich, Engineering and Science – Dr Acharya on Wednesday 9th February at 6 pm.  This free talk discussing global food security and sustainable food production in view of climate change will be delivered online.

In view of the climate change, most important challenge for global food security is the intensification of food production to sustainably feed around 9.6 billion people by 2050. The land footprint and dietary GHG emissions per capita for animal protein production and consumption in the UK is approximately twice that of plant protein production and consumption. In this talk, Parag will discuss whether plant based food can be one of the key enablers to reduce the environmental footprint of our current food system and how the University of Greenwich aims to deliver science on how to sustainably make nutritious and tasty foods by understanding the food innovation challenges.

Biography: Dr Parag Acharya is the Senior Fellow in Food Innovation at Natural Resources Institute. Previously he worked in food and biotechnology industry sectors in North America and Europe which included working for Unilever Food to deliver novel product and process technologies. As a part of Food and Nutrition Sustainability Initiative (FaNSI), Parag is leading climate smart food research and innovation program with particular interest in alternative protein based food innovation. www.nri.org/people/acharya-parag.
