FREE Talk at The Historic Dockyard – Steering a Course for Maritime Heritage

July 4 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Join Hannah Cunliffe, Director of National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) in the next instalment of  “In conversation with …” evening talks. The conversation with Hannah will be compered by Simon Stephens, Royal Museums Greenwich.

Hannah Cunliffe MA has been Director of National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) since 2017, having previously worked for the organisation for ten years.   Prior to this, she ran a freelance research and consultancy business after completing an MA in Maritime History at the University of Greenwich.  During her time at NHS-UK, Hannah has overseen a number of major projects, including undertaking an Infrastructure Audit which led to the establishment of the Shipshape Network in 2010, co-ordinating the publication of the three-volume guidance series ‘Understanding Historic Vessels’ and managing the Shipshape Heritage Training Partnership (SHTP) which delivered 26 youth training placements.

Hannah will be talking about the work undertaken by National Historic Ships UK since it was first established in 2006 with a remit to represent the interests of historic vessels and their supporting infrastructure.  She will look at current and past projects, as well as highlighting some of the successes and challenges of an organisation tasked with covering the whole of the UK with a very small team.  She will reflect on the present state of the historic vessel sector and give consideration to what the future holds for Britain’s maritime heritage.

Hannah sits on the HMS Victory Technical Committee, the Maritime Heritage Network Committee, the International Congress of Maritime Museum Ship’s Committee and the Mobile Heritage Advocacy Group, and is a trustee for the Society of Nautical Research.  Sailing from a young age on an 80-year old Bristol Channel pilot cutter, she has a lifelong love of the sea and now owns a 114-year old yacht based on the Solent.

The evening will be compered by Simon Stephens.  Simon has been Curator of the Ship Model and Boat Collections at Royal Museums Greenwich for over 40 years and is also on the council of experts for National Historic Ships. There will be a question and answer session following the conversation.

This talk is free to attend (you do not need a Dockyard admission ticket).  Tickets must be booked in advance.  To book a space click here.
