FREE Lecture hosted by Rochester Bridge Trust

September 12, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Discover the conflict in Medway’s past when you attend a free lecture hosted by a medieval charity.

At a crossroads with the River Medway and the Roman road of Watling Street, Rochester Bridge is at a key strategic point for travel between the Capital and the Continent.

The free talk, Rochester Bridge in times of Modern Conflict, will cover the period from the English Civil War onwards, introducing the audience to the impact of war on or near the river crossing.

Presented by Ray Harris of the Court of Wardens and Assistants of the Rochester Bridge Trust, the talk will take place in the Bridge Chapel.

Ray Harris said: “Being in a strategic location on Watling Street and the River Medway, Rochester Bridge has seen much conflict and change over the years. This talk will introduce the most recent four centuries, helping people to understand the significance of this site in a local and national context.

“Conflicts covered will include World War Two and the Napoleonic Wars, with primary emphasis on the two world wars.”

The free lecture will take place on Tuesday, 12 September, at 6.30pm promptly, in the Bridge Chapel, Rochester. Doors will open at 6pm, and tea and coffee will be served.

Tickets are limited and must be booked, either book online via Eventbrite or by emailing

The talk will take place during Heritage Open Days week, with the doors to the Bridge Chapel and Chamber opened to the public between 11am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, 9-10 September; Thursday, 14 September; and Saturday and Sunday, 16-17 September. Then from Thursday, 21 September, the buildings will be open most Thursdays and Saturdays until the end of October. Rochester Bridge Trust is located at 5 Esplanade, Rochester ME1 1QE.  Please check the website before visiting as there will be some necessary closures during this period. Open days are free of charge and no booking is required to visit the buildings, which are fully accessible following their major refurbishment.
