Chatham Historic Dockyard – FREE Day Out

If you’ve never visited and wondered what is behind the walls of Chatham Historic Dockyard then this is a date for your diary! Saturday 15th June is the chance to find out as you can visit for FREE.
The Historic Dockyard is offering a unique opportunity for people to visit the most complete dockyard of the age of sail for FREE. Visitors will be able to take a look at the three historic Warships including HMS Gannet (a Victorian sloop built in Sheerness in 1878), HMS Cavalier (a Second World War Destroyer) and HM Submarine Ocelot (a cold-war submarine and last ship built for the Royal Navy at Chatham). Note: The ships won’t be open to visitors to go aboard.
Visitors will also be able to find out how rope is made; the Victorian Ropery has been making rope for over 400 years and still does today. See the Master Ropemakers at work in the unique Ropewalk that’s a quarter of a mile long.

With over 10 museums and galleries there’s plenty of opportunities to learn something new in a fun and interactive way. Learn more about the RNLI, saving lives at sea in the UK’s largest collection of RNLI historic lifeboats. Experience how the ships of the age of sail were built in the award-winning Command of the Oceans galleries. Steam trains will be thundering along Anchor Wharf and there will be a railway display area unique to this event.
Visitors will also have he chance to experience an Air Raid. with a guided tour, visitors will be taken in to one of the Dockyard’s very own Air Raid Shelters to discover what life was like in one during the Second world War. Note: There will be a small additional charge for this activity.
Family activities will be going on in the No. 1 Smithery Courtyard; an interactive education zone full of fun for the family throughout the day including learning and creating your own Rocket to fire!
Registration is required to attend this FREE day out. You will receive an email confirmation which you should take along with you on the day of your visit. Note: Parking on site will be restricted to Blue Badge Holders.
