Cavalier Crew Challenge at The Historic Dockyard this half term

Step aboard HMS CAVALIER this February half term and join in the Crew Challenge at The Historic Dockyard Chatham.
Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of HMS CAVALIER, the last surviving Royal Navy Destroyer from the Second World War, which holds a significant place in history as part of the National Destroyer Memorial.
When and where: 10th to 18th February aboard HMS Cavalier.
Families are invited to step aboard HMS CAVALIER and embark on an exciting journey to become honorary members of the ship’s crew. Throughout the event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn various skills that were vital to the crew’s daily operations.
Test your communication skills in the Signalling Activity, where you’ll send messages using the age-old techniques of Semaphore and Morse Code. Unlock the secrets of securing cargo with our Handling Cargo Session, mastering knots like the Reef Knot and the Bowline. Find out how pulleys are used to move heavy loads safely.
Next, call directions to the helm as you sit in the Captain’s Chair and discover the Art of Navigation. Learn how to steer the ship on its course and explore the points of the Compass. Discover the importance of compasses in determining bearings onboard ship.
Lastly, witness the Thrilling Race that cemented HMS CAVALIER’s reputation as the Fastest Ship of the Fleet. Get a front-row seat as HMS CAVALIER battles against HMS RAPID in the famous 1971 race to find the fastest Royal Navy Warship.
This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with history and experience life as a crew member aboard HMS CAVALIER.
The cost is included in the Dockyard entry ticket. No additional booking is required.
Note: The activity is recommended for ages 6+ but all ages are encouraged to take part in the activities. Parts of HMS Cavalier are accessible for wheelchair use, including Midships, Fwd Seaman’s Mess and Aft End via an onboard lift. It should be noted that HMS Cavalier has a set visitor capacity.
