Have you ever wondered how to tie knots? Or which knot to use?

Join a family-friendly introduction to knot tying workshop with the Master Ropemakers on 21st August 10 am to 1 pm.

During the three hour experience you will be taken on a behind the scenes tour of the working ropery, the last of the original four Royal Navy Ropeyards to remain in operation, before a workshop with Ian Bell, former HMS Victory Rigger and “one of the countries most experienced.’

You will learn the history and application of the knots followed by a practical, interactive lesson featuring commonly used knots.

The workshop group size is small, allowing plenty of opportunity to work closely with Ian and ask lots of questions.

This introduction session is perfect for beginners and family groups.

The workshop experience includes:

  • 30 minute VIP tour of the Ropery, with Master Ropemakers General Manager
  • 2.5 hour practical workshop with Ian Bell, former HMS Victory Rigger
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits
  • Access to the wider Dockyard site on the day of your workshop

Please note, this session is perfect for beginners and family groups. If you have a basic understand of knot tying or would prefer an adult-only workshop, please see their “Knot Tying with the Master Ropemakers” workshop.

The Historic Dockyard are operating additional safety measures to keep all visitors safe. Take a few moments to read their KNOW BEFORE YOU GO page for the latest information.

They encourage the wearing of face coverings within all covered spaces, this includes the Ropery and workshop room, to ensure your own safety and that of others. Group sizes are small and there is ample space for distancing within the workshop area.
