Burns Night

January 25, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

This evening is Burns Night and you may well be having your own celebrations.  It is a celebration of the life and enduring legacy of the great Scottish poet.  In the beginning it was a celebration organized by close friends and family as a memorial dinner and then transformed into  a countrywide event.

The traditional celebration is with traditional Scottish fare – haggis (a mix of sheep’s offal, spices and oats), scotch whisky and renditions of Burn’s poetry.  Robert Burns was deemed to be a revolutionary figure and a great source of inspiration to the founders of Liberalism and Socialism and enjoyed considerable success in his 20s.  His best known works include “Auld Lang Syne”, “A Red, Red Rose”, “To a Mouse” and the longer poem “Tam O Shanter”.  Burns we well known for his social commentary and focus on politics and became Scotland’s national poet.  He penned more than 550 poems and songs before he died of rheumatic fever in 1796 at the young age of 37.
