Chatham Maritime community fund, supporting communities across Medway
Chatham Maritime Trust is a registered charity supporting communities via its Chatham Maritime community fund, helping local wellbeing of the Chatham Maritime Estate, including its landscaping, environment, infrastructure, flood protection and amenities.
In addition, the Trust’s objects cover the provision of recreation and leisure facilities for the Chatham Maritime Estate and its neighbourhood, the Medway Towns. Also, the provision for the education and assistance of young people and other members of the Medway Towns community to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities.
In summary, Chatham Maritime Trust’s primary aim is to support local wellbeing, education and recreation.

Community Fund Overview and Impact
- Target area. Funding can only be given to beneficiaries that are located in the Medway Towns as stipulated in our governing document. Priority is given to initiatives directly benefiting the Chatham Maritime Estate and its community.
- Impact. Between April 2021 and late 2025 the Trust distributed £165K to support over 61 different organisations.
- Supported causes. The Trust has supported a wide range of projects. For grants awarded for the year 2025/26 see the report Community Outreach Report year ending March 2026
As part of its community outreach, the Trust works in partnership with Wetwheels South East, Black Lion Swimming Club, Think Forward and Rochester Cathedral supporting community projects.
Application Information
Eligible applicants include registered charities and community organisations. New groups must demonstrate measurable community impact. Individual applications and large national charities are typically not accepted.
Applications are accepted throughout the year and decisions are made within 30 days of receipt. All submissions should be made on the Application Form. Proposals are considered by a small group of Trustees – the Charity Activities Group.

Recent initiatives
Up until recently the Trust worked with Medway Education Business Partnership to provide work experience placements and welcomed students from Thomas Aveling School and Sir Joseph Williamson Mathematical School.
Chatham Maritime Trust is enthusiastic to support young people to create brighter futures and hopefully help inspire the next generation.
