Chatham Maritime Trust is a registered charity created in 1997 to become the long-term guardian of the Chatham Maritime Estate.

Chatham Royal Naval Dockyard closed in 1984, ending 400 years of shipbuilding history. Part of the Dockyard was retained as a commercial port, and part became The Historic Dockyard, maintaining the heritage and the many fine Georgian buildings for public benefit. The remaining 140 hectares (350 acres) became Chatham Maritime, one of the largest urban regeneration schemes in the country. The completed Estate will eventually house over 2000 new homes, a university campus, a shopping centre, offices, a leisure facility and a 500-berth marina. The result is an exciting new place to live, work and visit. As development and new infrastructure is completed, ownership transfers to Chatham Maritime Trust for long-term management, and maintenance of the public domain.
