Land Management

Chatham Maritime Estate has a 24/7 land management presence but it is not responsible for private property on the Island. Land Management monitors activities on the development by means of a 30-camera CCTV system, and by regular mobile patrols.

Based in Pembroke Gatehouse (adjoining Pembroke Gate, just off the Observatory Roundabout), the team is led by Land Management Supervisor (photo left) Joan Fahy.

On such a large estate, the Land Management's role is extremely diverse involving a wide range of responsibilities.

Land Management does provide a powerful deterrent to any would-be criminal, and Chatham Maritime is a very safe place to live, work and visit. The Land Management team monitors Trust-owned property and assets and public open spaces reporting any unusual activity.

In addition, Land Management is a vital part of the safety regime. Chatham Maritime has two and a half kilometres of river frontage and twenty hectares (fifty acres) of dock basin. Land Management monitors waterside activity to protect residents and visitors, and regularly checks safety equipment. During flood warnings Land Management monitors the river level, and may close the riverside walk for safety reasons.

Land Management also controls the comings and goings of contractors onto the Estate, and acts as “eyes and ears” for the estate management team.
Tony Bartholomew
In addition to the Land Management Team, Chatham Maritime has its own Police Community Support Officer. PCSO Tony Bartholomew started at Chatham Maritime in October 2007 and is now a familiar presence around the Estate. Tony works closely with the Land Management team, but as a PCSO is not limited to only Estate-owned property.
The PCSO role is part-funded by Chatham Maritime Trust, in conjunction with Kent Police.
